Community Healthvan Program - Adventist Medical Center

The Community Healthvan program at Adventist Health began in 1981. The Healthvan partners with community organizations to serve the community by providing free or low cost health screenings in tandem with health education services to prevent illness among the underserved: low income and migrant worker families, teens, seniors and the homeless. The Healthvan is a self-contained, mobile resource that travels throughout five northwest counties (Clackamas, Clark, Multnomah, Washington and Yamhill) in an effort to provide health care to those who do not have health insurance and/or access to medical care.

In 2005, over 2,100 people were served by the Healthvan and its staff at 37 sites. Services provided include:

Blood pressure testing
Cholesterol screening
Diabetes screening
Immunizations and treatment for children of migrant families
HIV screening
Eye examinations
Bone density testing
Pulmonary function testing
Stroke screening (ultrasound examination)
Flu shots
Health risk profiles
Hemoglobin testing
Physician visits

Program Goals

To encourage positive lifestyle changes that will decrease health risk factors for residents in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area.
To identify through screenings, individuals who are at risk for future health problems and provide education on reducing their risk.
To develop and enhance partnerships with other community services organizations, colleges/universities, and hospital departments to provide joint services to the community.
To increase and improve the physician referral and follow-up process by linking high-risk individuals with community health services for treatment and education.
To provide timely and reliable health information and illness prevention services to residents in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area.
