Serving our community is the number one priority here at
Adventist Medical Center. We respond to community needs by being
a leader in quality health care, health awareness and wellness
education. Some of the ways we serve our community are:
- Bi-monthly distributing 104,000 Health for Life publications
- Wellness classes offered to over 14,000 individuals
- Our Healthvan provided over $53,000 in free care
- Off-campus clinics take care to the community
- Sponsors community events: Race for the Cure, Adopt a Family and NAMI Walk
Our Heritage
Since 1893 AMC has been providing quality care to the
Portland community. Even though our name and location has
evolved, our commitment and service oriented attitude has
remained constant. AMC is now a 302-bed facility serving 900,000
residents. It is full service with major emphases in: surgery,
cardiology, neurosurgery, mental health, obstetrics,
orthopedics, outpatient rehabilitation, primary care, home care
and hospice.
Today, Adventist Health circles the globe. Sponsored by the
Seventh-day Adventist Church, this network includes 160
hospitals and nearly 500 clinics, nursing homes and dispensaries
worldwide. AMC is proud to be a part of this network and share
the vision to treat the whole person—mind, body and spirit.
Our Commitment
So why choose Adventist Medical Center? As a not-for-profit
organization, every dollar we make stays where it should—in our
community. Our earnings never land in shareholders' mailboxes.
Instead, they are used to enhance patient care, expand hospital
programs and build new facilities. To make life better for those
we serve.
We've been doing just that for more than a century. Although
costs have risen, reimbursement has fallen and competition
continues to increase, our commitment to our community has never
wavered. This same commitment is passed along to our employees,
business partners and members of our medical staff.
We are here for no other reason than to serve the people
around us to the best of our ability. Our dedicated team of
caregivers believe they can make a difference. With new
generations come new people; the spirit of our existence remains
the same. Our continued pursuit of perfection for over 100 years
has put us at the forefront of both service excellence and
community betterment.
Benefiting Our Community
Serving the Underserved
AMC is commissioned to provide care for all regardless of
ethnicity, age or financial status. This dedication drives
efforts to provide free and discounted services to the
underserved population of our community.

Our Healthvan program partners with community organizations
to serve the community by providing free or low cost health
screenings in tandem with health education services to prevent
illness among the underserved: low income and migrant worker
families, teens, seniors and the homeless.
The Healthvan program provides services that include: blood
pressure testing, cholesterol screening, diabetes screening,
immunizations and treatment for children of migrant families,
HIV screening, eye examinations, bone density testing, pulmonary
function testing, stroke screening (ultrasound examination) and
flu shots.
Community Involvement
Interacting with our community is very important at AMC and
we are involved in several community events such as Adopt a
Family, Race for the Cure and the NAMI Walk. AMC also partners
with other leading community organizations in health care such
as, Oregon Center for Nursing, STARS Foundation
and Oregon Cardiovascular Symposium to improve health in our
neighborhoods.
Many employees volunteer time to these events and
organizations. In 2008, 202 employees and their families
participated in Portland's Race for the Cure.
Our physicians give their time to the Portland Adventist
Community Services (PACS), to provide medical services free of
charge to those without medical insurance. All laboratory,
radiology and emergency services are facilitated by AMC. Many
hospital physicians from a wide range of specialties are willing
to treat patients on a referral basis from the clinic as well.
Last year PACS had 999 clinic patients.
Community Benefits
Every day, we give back to our community in the form of free
health care, donations, prevention and wellness activities and
subsidized programs that we choose to operate at a loss simply
because they are needed. It is important to differentiate
between bad debt and charity care offered by AMC.
